Wind is the last factor, and it is a serious one on the west side. Santa Ana gusts funnel down through the western canyons in the fall, carrying dust and real force, so posts and gates on the exposed benches are set for gust load rather than for looks alone. A solid six foot privacy fence is a sail, and it is only as strong as the footing under it. That is the difference between a fence that rides out a wind event and one that leans after the first one.
